2 And 4 Stroke Engines – What Are The Differences

Stroke refers to the movement of piston in the engine. Two-stroke engines make piston move two times whereas four-stroke engines piston moves 1 times in all the directions. Each movement is categorized by a unique activity of compression of fuel & production of power. So, what’s the exact different between two and four stroke engines? Let’s did dip into it:

In a two-stroke engine piston moves only two times. The 1st movement is known as the compression stroke and the 2nd stroke is known as the power stroke.

Compression stroke is an act of compressing fuel during which piston goes up compressing the fuel into the engine.

Compression stroke is followed by power stroke, during which the fuel is ignited, which pushes the piston down generating so much power & torque.

In a 4-stroke-engine, the piston moves four times, for example, 2 sets of ups & downs. The movements are classified as follows:

  • Compression stroke: During this stroke fuel is compressed. The compressing is vital to produce power at the later phases.
  • Power stroke: The fuel ignites & moves the piston down. The act of moving down generates power & torque.
  • Exhaust stroke: Again the piston goes up and drives the power released and ignite the exhaust valve.
  • Intake stroke: Again the piston goes down & draws new amount of fuel and air ready to compress again.

Conclusion:

Though a 2-stroke engine releases more power & torque, they’re not suitable for the everyday activities. Moreover, they’re not fuel efficient, have a shorter lifespan, contaminating agent and also noisier than their 4-stroke counterparts. Thus, four-stroke engine should be preferred as they’re less polluting, more fuel efficient, and affordable. Four stroke motorized bicycles are perfect for daily commuting or activities.
